Facebook Places

So I get this idea the other day that I'm going to use Facebook Places, instead of Foursquare. It's not that I think “Places” is better than Foursquare, it's just that I got totally bored of the game and most of the places I go are so heavily trafficked that trying to become the Mayor is almost pointless. If only the locations could control who is mayor or at least part of city council, but that's another post. I started looking into the API, mainly the javascript SDK and there are a ton of cool things that you can do with the libraries that I didn't know where available to us. In fact I really never looked into the facebook api before.

So what I've decided to do is build a little application that will allow me to experiment a tad more with the api and do some cool jQuery type of things. From what I can see so far it supports a lot of functionality, it's up to me to come up with the game. As of right now, I haven't thought of a game, but what I have thought about is what I want to initially display. I want there to be some integration with Google maps, and plotting the points that either I or my friends have been to.

Ultimately, I think that locations could use something like this to notify would be travelers of a sale or of some event going on in their store while others are out shopping. Something along those lines could really be useful, but I haven't seen it yet on Facebook.

Over the next few posts I'll post the name of the app, the location and some screen shots of the progress I am making. Like most things, this is a project that I'm doing on the side, so I'm not sure how much time I can really dedicate to it, but I'll sure try my hardest.
