Finding Work
I get asked a lot on how I find work. To be honest, I don't so much as find work, but work finds me. You see I believe that the best way to get a lead is by producing quality products and projects that allow a customer to share their experience with others in the industry.
It's nice to get referrals, but in order to get referrals you need to have a lot of things in order.
First and foremost, one must have a portfolio of work to show potential customers. Usually this isn't a problem for those already in the industry. We've all done plenty of work, but make sure the work you show your potentially new partner is your very best work. Lets face it, some work is better than others, and some clients are easier to impress than others. That means you should always be prepared to discuss you body of work and be able to relate that work to a query by the new customer.
The next thing that all freelancers need is a business card. Business cards are a great way to spread your name around. Hand out a couple to your friends and family, they are going to be the most willing individuals to help spread your name. I use my business card almost every day, which means my card needs to clearly represent me. I want my card to leave an impression on someone, so I created it to be unique. Take some time to work on a card that tells someone who you are. Having your name, number and website address on your card, just isn't enough. If your a designer put a little design behind it, and if you aren't a great designer, find someone who is and get their help.
Don't forget those websites like Craigslist, FreeLanceSwitch to name just a few in order to find that next big gig. There are plenty of job boards and freelance boards out there that have plenty of opportunities. Remember to follow the directions, and don't forget to follow up. There are a ton of web resources and you should utilize all of them. If your proactive and persistent I have no doubt that customers will be contacting you right away.
