I Need A Brand

How often as a web designer do you walk into a brief and potential client says "our brand is important to us"? Almost always right? From the work I have done, the brand is the most important thing out there, especially when it comes to online commerce.

So if branding is important for my clients, why hasn't it been important for me? I've got a Wordpress blog, that I haven't updated since, oh March of 2009. Yup, as sad as that may be, it's sad. Extremely sad, especially since I build custom blogs and websites for people. How pathetic.

So that's all going to change. That's right, it's a start of a new year and I'm going to blog like a mad man. Well not really, but I'm at least going to change my brand a little bit. Yup, changing it up and contributing content that's important to me.

In doing so I want to move away from what the "normal" blogger has setup. Usually you visit their site and your immediately hit with all kinds of stuff. For me I use a lot of other social media websites, and don't really see why I need to replicate those same functionalities into my system. It also makes it easier once one of those technologies goes away. (Hey it happened to Myspace, it's going to happen to twitter eventually as well)

So here is what I want my blog to be about: ME!!!!

You read that right, it's all about me and my style, but from a technical perspective, here are the social tools I want connected to my site.

• My blog. No it's not tumblr, it's my very own, written in Django and I'm going to keep that.
• flickr - This is where I put my photos of my family, clients, etc. It's important so I want it imported
• twitter - yeah that little website where I can write my daily doings in 140 characters or less
• vimeo - this is where i share videos of whatever. Oh yeah I'm addicted to my flip camera. Too easy to record worthless stuff
• facebook - seriously, do I need to explain this?
• Music - so yeah, i'm sure there is something I can add there

That's kinda it for a while, but the design is ultra important to me. It needs to be clean and full of amazingly cool stuff. I'd like to incorporate a little more jQuery in addition to flash, so that's going to be the fun part. However, the biggest reward of all, will be finally removing myself from Wordpress. While Wordpress was good for an absolute beginner, and a blog only site, I found that I quickly outgrew the capabilities and my ability to code anything in php. The code was messy and always seemed really segmented. Let me be honest, I simply hated programming in php, it messed with my mind.

Now that I've started playing with Django, I love it, and don't see myself changing any time soon. So, I'm off to create something terribly unique and fun. At the very least I'll unleash my very own brand unto the world and see what happens.
