Google Analytics for tracking

Since we are on this whole kick to get Google to notice our site, and to hopefully get people to visit and buy things from us, we should probably have a way to see if those changes we've made make any difference. Lucky for use, Google provides a tool that provides us with more data than we could ever ask for and best of all, IT'S FREE! Google Analytics will tell use exactly what our visitors are doing on our website.

Getting analytics on your website is about as painless of a task as one could ask for. All you need to do is create a Google account, click sign up, enter your site details and put the code on your site. It really is that simple, but if you want a little help, I've provided some.

Getting all setup with Analytics is easy if you know what your doing. Even if you don't know, the instructions are fairly straight forward, but if your crunched for time like everyone else, here are a few short steps to get up and running.

  1. Log into your Google Account
  2. Under "My Account" you should see a section called "My Products". Find "Analytics" and click it
  3. Once your there fill in the information that Google asks for.
  4. Click "Finished" and wait for the code to appear.
  5. Copy the code, place it on your site (right before the closing body tag)
  6. Go back to the Analytics page and click "Finished"
  7. Wait for Google to crawl your site

That's pretty much it for Google Analytics. We'll be using this tool to track our results and monitor what keywords are working for us and which ones aren't. However anyone running any kind of website should have some sort of analytical data that they can refer to. When it comes to ecommerce, it's highly important to track such user data. To not track your users, would be foolish.
