I Want to Build Your Website
Follow me here and let me show you what I can do!
Hey Google Over Here
The website is built, and now that I'm back from vacation (watching copious amounts of sports), it's time to concentrate on getting it noticed. When I say noticed, I want to be recognized by Google, as that seems to be the "gold standard" for successful websites. In addition to establishing a good ranking within the search index, I want to concentrate on keeping my costs low and do as little as possible paid advertising.
With that said, over the next several posts we will be discussing Google, and how we can rise to the top of their index the cheapest and most ethical way possible. There are many free tools out there that can help you see your current position and those of your competition, and we are going to utilize them to their fullest.
In order to demonstrate this, we should probably find out how our website rates right now and then check the statistics in a few weeks, to see if any of the tweaks we are about to implement make any difference.
Currently we have the following statistics:
Page Rank: 0 (nothing) Backward Links: Zip Visitors: Zero
Your probably wondering how I came up with these statistics and it's pretty easy... The Google Toolbar. Although this toolbar may already be installed on your computer, you may not know how much of a punch this little gem packs. For those of you whom don't know about the Google Toolbar download and install it, the tools it provides are incredible.
If you don't have the Google Toolbar, you must install it right now. Follow these instructions on how to download and install it. It's really pretty simple and painless, yet the functionality will pay for itself in the end.
- Visit: Google
- Scroll down the page and look for the link to "Toolbar". It looks like two eyes, one in a yellow circle the other in a red one.
- Click on the link and you'll be presented with a link on the right that says "Download Google Toolbar".
- Follow the instructions and the rest is left up to the installer.
- Make sure when it asks you to read the fine print that you do. Basically you are agreeing that your sending data to Google. After you agree, another popup will appear that asks you if you want to turn on pagerank. I always answer yes to that so I can view my and my competitions page rank.
- Your browser may want to restart, so let it and you should now have the toolbar in your browser.
Now that we have the toolbar installed play around with it a little bit. I'm sure you'll find some interesting things. Next we'll talk about finding out who is linking to us and who are competition is. Once we know that, we'll be able to figure out what they are doing right and what we can do better.
