I Want to Build Your Website

We Should Start Getting Nutty

While I wait for my client to get back to me with some contract stuff and some initial requirements, I thought I might start on my TeeNut site. When I start with a website, I like to think of the content I want to produce before I come up with a full blown design.

Starting with a design is something you can do, however I prefer to know the available pieces of content before I start a design. So for this one, I'm going to show you how I created it, from soup to nuts. I thought the nuts thing was rather appropriate.

Here are the things that my model need to include, and in no particular order:

  • Title (required)
  • Body (required)
  • Published Date (required)
  • Tags (Not Required)
  • Keywords (not required)
  • Description (not required)
  • Found At (not required)
  • Category (required)
  • Status (required)

That pretty much takes care of what I need, and it's not too different than what I might get out of one of the standard blogging packages. But we want to eventually go a little further with our website and not have to depend on plugins to get the job done each and every time we want something done to the site.

You'll notice that I don't have a place in the model for storing images. I know that in past models I've used the photologue project to manages my photos and my galleries. This time I want to put my images in context of my content, and don't want to be subjected to placing the image at the from or end of a post. Photologue never integrated well into the model development and admin, so I've chosen another route. This time I will be using filebrowser and tinymce as my editor. So that will pretty much take care of my image issues.

On the next post I will go over the actual model and how it looks. After that we'll install the model and start formatting the data into something meaningful that people will want to read. Recently I've been playing with The Gimp and have developed a nice workflow that takes me from concept to output in as few steps as possible.

So the next step will be to design the model, and then after that we should start to see some real results.
