Which Micro Blog Is Right?

Recently I've been getting a lot of questions regarding Micro-blogging. You know that quick little blogging with 140 characters or less, that everyone seems so enamored with lately. Most people have heard of Twitter, as that's the platform I use, but that doesn't mean it's the best. Here are the four platforms that I'm looking at that seem to be the most heavily used, and probably have the best chance of surviving.

In order to review each of these fairly, I thought about the ways that I might want to use the service. For me there are certain things I want to be able to do, and be able to do them quickly. Here is a list of attributes that I think are important for a micro-blog to stay alive and for me to be compelled to use it.

  1. API: There has got to be a way to do things with the data that aren't so out of the box. The use of Ajax is all over the internet and I may want to integrate the micro format into my larger blog. I see this one as really important.
  2. Mobility: My phone is everything to me. I use the Palm Pre and I'm going to need a way to send updates via my cellphone. I also want to be able to view others posts via my cell or web browser on my cell as well. This also is very important.
  3. Usage: This goes without saying. One must find the system easy to use and be able to do things quickly. Post fast, read faster. That's the way these things work.
  4. Personalized: Like anything, I'm going to want to change whatever it is that they give me. Whether it be a new background, and funky header, or a widget that lets me do something cool, inevitably I'm going to want to change that deal up.

So that's the criteria I'm using to find out which one of these environments I like. Reality is, I'm checking out the other platforms to see how they measure up to Twitter. At the very least I should be able to detail where each of the applications weaknesses are and what it's strengths are. This will help when a client wants a suggestion on which application to choose for their business.
