Why I Love This

Today I saw an interesting tweet about winning an iPod Nano. No it wasn't the Nano that grabbed my attention, it was the "Are you a freelancer?" question. Being a freelancer is something thats new to me, but it also something that I'm very proud of. I'm sure you've heard countless stories about people quitting their day job and escaping the 9 to 5 to enjoy more time with their families and activities that are more enjoyable. Well, I don't have the same story. Actually, not even close.

I actually left my "Day Job" because I wanted to do more. Sounds crazy doesn't it? The truth of the matter was that I worked for a large company that had great benefits, wonderful teammates, and a flexible schedule where I worked from home. Surely you think I'm crazy for leaving, and I trust me I questioned myself many times, but the burning desire to do more was always there.

Finding Work

I get asked a lot on how I find work. To be honest, I don't so much as find work, but work finds me. You see I believe that the best way to get a lead is by producing quality products and projects that allow a customer to share their experience with others in the industry.

It's nice to get referrals, but in order to get referrals you need to have a lot of things in order.

We Are Changing

I don't know if I wanted to call this a change or a maturing. This blog has served me very well over the past few months, but now it's time to change a tad so that we can keep up with the times and the growing need of my readers. With that said, I'm officially able to say that we've grown up in a big way.

As many of you know i started this blog as an experiment really, on how to build, attract, analyze and maintain a website. What I didn't expect, was for people to actually call me and offer me gigs on doing those vary things for them. We'll call them "clients", or "friends" in need of a face lift. Well I'm no surgeon, but I can dissect a website fairly well, and I can tell what's going to work and what isn't.

However, I couldn't do it all alone, so I had to hire someone. Then I quickly figured out that there was really too much work for two people to do, so I hired a third. Yup, that's right. There are now three of us working for "Yet To Be Named Company".

You Said What?

About once every other week, I attend a meeting of web professionals that want to talk about new skills and techniques related to the web design industry. Usually it's one of those events that you walk away from really anxious to get back to your computer and do more research on a particular topic.

This past week was no exception, however the excitement wasn't due to technology. Nope this week the topic of customer service and how to deal with a bad client.

Looks Like The Projects Are Heating Up

Just when I thought I might have to start standing on street corners to sell my services, emails started to come in one after another. Really it couldn't have come at a better time. As I was finishing up some projects, and moving into the support role, I began to think about business development.

As any freelancer knows, getting new projects is the most important and stressful part about being on your own. Your ability to be successful at landing new prospects is the key to you putting food on the table. In addition you have to be able to have more than one project going at a time, just one won't be enough, unless it's a big corporate account.

Be Your Own Boss

Recently I was asked by a friend of mine to discuss with a client of his, the moment I knew that I wanted to start my own company and not work for someone else. As hard as that question may seem to answer, for me it was rather easy. I didn't start my own business because I wanted to be rich, nope not even close. I started doing my own thing because I wanted to do things that I thought were interesting. I've done the startup thing and it was fun, and I've done the big company things, and it too had it's advantages. However, neither has been as rewarding as owning my own small agency.

With that said, that isn't the object of this post. As I sat down with my "new friend", I discovered that I had been through a lot of trials and tribulations while going out on my own, and that I owed it to those that actually ready my posts to share with them the highs and lows of such an adventure. Setting sail on your own adventure in web development can be an exciting and scary all at the same time, but what I hope to share with you over the next few posts is how I did it and how my experiences may help you. As with anything here, your mileage may vary, and I welcome hearing your comments on whether you've had the same experiences.
