Not All Shopping Carts Created Equal
Like many web developers, I often get asked if I can install or configure a website to do e-commerce. Since most business really want to sell you something, I usually end up installing and configuring an Open Source solution like oscommerce. Because it's free, available on most cpanel installations, and has a huge community of contributors, I pick it first for client projects.
This time the scenario is a bit different, I wanted to launch one of my own sites, and didn't want to use oscommerce. Whether or not that turned out to be a good decision is yet to be seen, but I can tell you one thing, and that's that not all Open Source Shopping carts are created equal.

Choosing a Good OpenSource CMS
Recently I began working on a project that took me back to where I started many years ago. Content Management Selection and this time the focus isn't on Enterprise packages, its focused on Open Source technologies and this time they must use PHP. So I'm looking at PHP CMSs for a company and putting together some demos for them to view.
One thing that I found out right away, is that many of these products have demos in full form on their website. So what follows is the research I did and how I went about giving demos of the Open Source CMS systems and what my final decision turned out to be.

Django Admin Is Broken
So I was doing some work with the latest version of Django and found a little error that was pretty simple to fix. When I started the admin for the teeshirtnut.com site, I noticed that the "Change Password", and "Log Out", links were broken. Basically what was happening, was ...

We Should Start Getting Nutty
While I wait for my client to get back to me with some contract stuff and some initial requirements, I thought I might start on my TeeNut site. When I start with a website, I like to think of the content I want to produce before I come up with a full blown design.
Starting with a design is something you can do, however I prefer to know the available pieces of content before I start a design. So for this one, I'm going to show you how I created it, from soup to nuts. I thought the nuts thing was rather appropriate.

I'm Nuts for Tshirts
I know that I had said yesterday that I was starting a 2 new projects, and yes that is the case, but I guess I wouldn't be me if I didn't start something else that I don't have a bunch of time for. Yup that's right, I've started a new little project for myself that allows me to keep up with all of my tshirts.
For those of you that know me really well, you know that I'm somewhat of a non dress up type of guy, and more of the hang out in a tshirt type of guy. I'm not about to make fun of those that like to wear nice shirts and pants, it's just that I'm more comfortable in a tshirt, jeans and sandals. So with that said, I'm sure you can guess what kind of site I'm going to create. Yup, that's right, a site dedicated to the shirts that I make, and how I make them.

I Got Two New Projects
I'm excited to tell you that because of this blog, I've been able to snag two new projects. Yup, that's right, two actual paying clients. It's rather exciting based on the fact that I had to take some time away to complete some other projects and didn't have a lot of time to dedicate to this blog.
